Today I’m sharing a fun Spring Coloring Page that Sophie and I created together as a creative challenge and race again the clock! Read on to see what the challenge was and my thoughts about creative field trips!
As humans we are basically creatures of habit. Agree? Whether it is eating the same breakfast every day (I ate Honey Bunches of Oats every single day for all of high school) or sitting in the same chair at the dinner table, or driving the same route to work everyday. We are pretty predictable. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing unless you have a job that relies heavily on creativity …. ehemm ….
As a designer I notice myself getting stuck in habits. I get stuck on the same font, colors, pattern and shapes. I don’t want that to happen! I want to try and be more guided by creativity that habit.
I read a comment the other day that made me come to the conclusion (again) that it is important to make time to practice creativity. I’m not talking about clicking over to Pinterest and being inspired. (Although that has a place) I’m talking about real life making something out of nothing.
Earlier this week I made some time to do a little creative exercise. I set the timer for 15 minuets. I opened up Illustrator and told Sophie that I was going to make her a coloring page.
I spent 15 mins on my Wacom Tablet creating as much of a spring flowery coloring page as I could get done. I tried not to spend time erasing or over analyzing. I just got something drawn on the art board. The coloring page is not complete and it definitely isn’t perfect but the whole purpose of the exercise was to spend 15 mins challenging myself with a different creative project.
Things I learned: I have no idea what a bird’s wing looks without looking at a picture, Futura is a great outline font, and making swirls with the twirl tool in illustrator is really fun!
In the end Sophie was happy to have something to color and I got a little extra practice time to push outside of my creative bubble. I’d say it was a success and I plan on doing it again soon!
// I haven’t been the only one with creativity on my mind. This podcast Creative Field Trips by Elise is so fun!
// Now I challenge YOU to do some sort of creative exercise this week! Even if it is 15 mins!
