For any of you who have browsed my Etsy shop you will have noticed that most of my product images are ‘digital’. I have been wanting to take more real life photos of my work. Today I worked on that goal for a little bit while I was at my mom’s house. She has the most awesome collection of stuff… Vintage soda bottles, pyrex, mason jars, etc. Perfect props for photos!
I don’t have a big fancy camera and I am by no means a photographer. I have read several photography ebooks, my favorite is Tasty Food Photography. And even though it was geared to food photography I still got a lot of awesome information about lighting and editing. I also totally enjoyed reading this iPhoneography series on Persnickety Prints blog.
Point is… With some general photography ideas and the power of my iPhone 5s camera I was able to do what I consider a mostly successful mini product shoot! Someday I hope to own a big DSLR. But today is not that day.
Here are my (non professional) take aways from that ebook for product photos with an iPhone…
1. Use LOTS of natural light.
2. Tap on your screen to select your focus point.
3. To get more “ground level” close ups turn your phone upside down (I love this tip!)
4. DONT use the zoom feature on your phone. Zoom by using your feet and getting closer. If you need to crop and get closer after you take the picture you can!
5. Try lots of different angles.
6. Practice a LOT! {I know I plan too!}
